Our constant pursuit of technological advancement has led us to a major breakthrough in the heat resistant materials industry. That breakthrough is volcanic rock, more specifically, basalt. If that name sounds familiar it’s because basalt is a naturally heat resistant volcanic rock, one you may have heard of in geology class. Gaskets Incorporated has started testing materials made of basalt and could potentially augment our silica based fibers with basalt products. The good news is that basalt has a simpler manufacturing process and is stronger than silica. basalt fibers could be used for tadpole seals, and expansion joint sleeves with service temperatures up to 1800°F/980°C.
